We first spotted Silwy’s hanging glasses in a Swiss overlander in the deserts of Morocco and instantly knew we wanted to give them a try.
We love a good glass of red wine or a crisp and cold gin and tonic on a summer’s day and don’t particularly like drinking from plastic, but carrying glasses on the road generally leads to breakages.
We knew we’d be fitting this clever system in our new overland truck build. Read on to find out if they really work as well as Silwy says they do!
Who is Silwy?
Based in Germany, Silwy makes a variety of different crystal glasses with powerful magnets in the base, which locks onto a magnetic gel mat or magnetic strip that can be wall, ceiling or under cabinet mounted.
Since 2015, Silwy has added over 150 innovative and well-designed products to their range and sells to marine, RV, motorhome and camping industries across the world.
Within the stylish glasses range, you can choose from red and white wine glasses, champagne glasses, short and long bar glasses, and beer glasses. The range also comes in a pretty plastic finish.
How do the glasses work?
Each glass comes with its own nano gel mat that holds the glass in place on a table or in a cupboard, even when moving. The flexible gel mat can be washed and restored to its full adhesive force whenever required.Â
What we really wanted for our overland truck build was the magnetic strip, which is strong enough to hold the glasses upside down or even vertically and offers excellent space-saving opportunities as well as breakage and rattle-free storage.
Silwy advises that you should not hang glasses using the nano gel mat. Although the connection feels strong, you can only hang the glasses using the specially designed metal strip.
Applying the metal strip
This is the trickiest bit. You need a steady pair of hands, a pencil to mark the spot and some degreaser.
We chose to hang our red wine and highball glasses quite close together, so we wanted to mark carefully where the strip would be applied. We cleaned the area thoroughly with an anti-stick solution to ensure there was no residual dirt or grime.
Once clean and ready to go, just peel the backing of the stick and press firmly into place. You need to leave the strip unused for around an hour, but we left it overnight before hanging the glasses, just to be sure.
Do Silwy magnetic glasses work?
The million-dollar question!
Yes, Silwy glasses really do what they say! Our glasses have stayed put over several months. We’ve covered motorway miles, a 36-hour pretty choppy ferry crossing to Spain from the UK, Spanish mountain roads and several days off-roading in Bardenas Reales, a badland of deserts, rocky tracks and challenging terrain.
They make a fantastic alternative to plastic glasses, or wrapping and protecting regular glasses and come highly recommended from us. Check out the Silwy store here.
