Is this motorhome parking in Spain unlawful?

A concerned expat has raised the alarm over ‘illegal’ campers dumping rubbish and human waste on a beach in Torrox, on Spain’s Costa Blanca.

It was reported in the Olive Press that a concerned resident claims around 70 motorhomes and campervans are unlawfully parked in this public car park near the lighthouse and that Torrox Council has taken no action to address the growing health risk.

“Many of the caravans do not have toilets and use the nearby flora, as do the vans when they empty their wastage,” the resident stated. “We have continually complained to the town hall and Guardia Civil, but our concerns are ignored despite a sign clearly stating that campervans and motorhomes are not allowed.”

The resident, who lives opposite the site, claims that although local police cleared the area in early January, removing around 30 vans, the numbers quickly increased again. Within days, the number of campervans grew to over 40, spilling out of the car park and onto his street.

“If I planned to sell my apartment and potential buyers saw the number of campers, I’m sure the offer would be reduced, and I would struggle to sell,” he added.

Notably, there are two designated campervan aires just minutes away – MiluCar and Paradise Beach Camper Area.

So, can you wild camp in Spain in a motorhome?

Off grid motorhome parking in Spain is easy and safe as long as you follow a few basic guidelines. Make sure your wild camping spot is not on private property, that you have parked respectfully of residents and other wild campers nearby and you leave no trace.

The problems come when lots of motorhomes congregate together and display camping behaviours, like getting their awnings, chairs and tables out like you would on a campsite. Unless you are in a designated area like an aire or campsite, camping bahaviours are illegal in Spain.

If you keep your belongings within the confines of the motorhome and nothing is extended beyond the footprint of the vehicle, like open windoes or your step out, then you are ‘parking’ and not ‘camping’ which is allowed and considered a legal activity, even if you intend on sleeping in your van. The infographic below explains the difference.

Wherever you are, you should not dump any grey waste or toilet cassette waste unless it’s at a designated place. Use Park4Night to find motorhome services and wild camping spots reveiwed by other motorhomers.
