Long trips by car are enjoyable but can also be monotonous. The big road keeps going, and playlists will eventually get tired; everyone will start looking for something new to entertain themselves.

This is precisely where road trip games are great, they don’t just make the long parts of the highway drive your new moments that are full of connection, laughter, and challenge. In case you are traveling with friends, family, or even coworkers, here are some cool games that will never let the mood down on your journey.

games to play on your road trip

1. The Alphabet Game

One of the timeless classics that every world traveler rejoices in is called the Alphabet Game. The game requests participants to provide words corresponding to each letter of the alphabet in consecutive order. Those words may be on the road signs, the ads by the road, license plates, or stores that you drive by.

The game requires witnesses to have both a keen eye for details and quick thinking skills as they move from “A” to “Z”. Whoever finds the “Z” first wins the game. Particularly, this game is incredibly amusing if your trip includes a drive through different towns where you have never been and diverse landscapes, which means lots of unusual words to find.

2. Poker on the Go

A road trip might be the last place you would imagine playing poker, but the truth is, it is very flexible. You don’t necessarily need a poker table, just a pack of cards and some imagination.

One exciting variation you could try is the jackpot sit and go poker games, which introduce an element of suspense to every hand. In this version, the buy-in is low, while the prize pool is determined randomly, creating an exhilarating level of unpredictability. Though you can’t play with chips in a moving car, you can still use tokens like snacks, coins, or points to keep track. It is such an excellent opportunity to improve your tactics, strengthen your bond with the travel buddies, and make time pass quickly.

3. 20 Questions

If your group is a fan of riddles and logical thinking, then this game will be just right. In this setup, one player comes up with a person, a place, or a thing, and the others can ask up to 20 yes-or-no questions to figure it out. Surprisingly, the game is quite flexible, as the chosen subject can be a famous person, a car’s interior item, or even an intangible idea. Moreover, if your group is competitive, you could make a point system to show who guessed the most correct answers. The game is perfect during long, boring, and passing times on the road.

4. Would You Rather?

“Would You Rather?” is a straightforward and funny game. Players take turns posing such questions as, “Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?” or “Would you rather give up your phone for a month or chocolate forever?”

The fun is in listening to everyone’s answers and the explanations they give. These questions may be humorous, profound, or ridiculous, depending on the mood of the group. If your road trip crew doesn’t know each other well, it’s also a great icebreaker.

5. The Movie Game

This game is ideal for lovers of cinema. The first person mentions an actor, and the next one has to say a movie that the actor was in. After that, the next player has to come up with the name of another actor from that movie, and so on. If someone can’t continue, he is out until the next round.

You would be amazed at how difficult it becomes as the game progresses, particularly when players start choosing lesser-known actors or movies. This game keeps all the players active and is a quiz on how well you remember pop culture.

6. I Spy

“I Spy” is among the longest-standing road trip classics and is still very effective for younger travelers (and adults who don’t mind acting silly). One person picks something that can be seen from the car and gives a hint by saying, “I spy with my little eye something that is [color/shape/letter].”

Then everyone else tries to guess until someone gets it right. It is easy, humorous, and an excellent way to keep kids who may become bored on long trips engaged.

7. Storytelling Chain

The real treasure in this game is imagination. One individual initiates a story by narrating only one sentence, and the subsequent members continue the chain by adding new sentences.

As a result, these four to six players grow the story and the storylines become so unexpectedly amusing that, like knights driving sports cars or superheroes grabbing coffee at gas stations. The game not only sparks the players’ imagination but also a lot of laughter when the story gets more and more absurd.
