Hi there!

We are Phil and Izzy. We’ve been adventuring and road tripping all our lives, covering over 100,000 miles in and around Europe. In 2018, we quit work, sold our home and have been travelling and living on the road full-time ever since.

The Gap Decaders blog is for people who love motorhoming and road trip travel. If you like a bit of adventure as well, then you’re in the right place!

Our mission is to help you make your travel dream a reality. We share information about destinations, travel tips, road trip itineraries and practical motorhome advice and stories from our life on the road.

Our Story

Izzy Nicholls and Phil Kelly have been together for over 20 years and share a love of being on the road, motorhoming, overlanding, motorbiking and camping, being active outdoors and having adventure – it’s in our DNA!

Phil is a petrolhead and practical with bags of common sense, and a real can-do attitude. He’s happiest when busy, hiking or tinkering, and making new friends (he’s Irish so enjoys a bit of craic!).

Izzy is a born writer, a multi-tasker and works well under pressure. She adores reading, learning new things and eating chocolate (or maybe drinking a glass of red!).

How did we get here? We spent years in the rat-race, pursuing careers and financial stability. We travelled (usually road tripping around Europe) and renovated properties in our spare time whilst dreaming of a different way of life.

In 2018, we made our dream a reality. We sold our house, quit our jobs and bought a motorhome to road trip Europe. Then we bought another motorhome, before moving into an overland truck!

Travel has always been a big part of our lives together, from motorhoming in Europe and the States, to life under canvas on family holidays and motorbike touring across the continent.

We have tried lots of travel styles in between, but always come back to being on the road, our absolute favourite way to travel.

Our Expertise

Since we started The Gap Decaders, we’ve visited over 40 countries and covered well over 100,000 miles. We’ve covered most of Europe, Morocco, Turkey and the Caucasus countries of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

We’ve travelled full-time in two A class motorhomes and an overland truck (with a motorbike on the back), and are now building a new overland truck which we are filmed for YouTube.
