Hiking Poqueira Gorge is one of the classic Sierra Nevada hikes, through the high Alpujarra and surrounding villages, with the mighty and dramatic, often snow covered, Mulhacén visible in the distance.
We parked in the bus parking at Pampaneira for two nights. although this was in February. It may be too busy in high season.
Probably not, due to distance, elevation gain and challenging terrain.
There are lots of cafes and bars in each of the villages you pass through.
This is a popular classic Sierra Nevada hike so expect to see other people on the route.
Hiking Poqueira Gorge, Sierra Nevada, Spain
We have stated this is an all year round hike, which is possible if there is no snow. As always, check the weather before attempting this one during the winter months.
This is a challenging hike with plenty of ascents and descents, with some difficult terrain underfoot. There are spectacular views of Mulhacén on the way out and down the gorge on the way in.
From the bus parking in Pampaneira head up through the village to the north-eastern most point and you will pick up the trail, follow the yellow and white markers to Bubion, through the village and on to Capileira. From here, follow the well marked path to La Cebadilla, where you cross the river and head back along the opposite side of the gorge…this is a good spot for lunch.
Follow the track to the next bridge and cross over the river headed back to Capileira where you will pick up the first part of the route to take you home.
