We loved this hike up La Pena for the amazing views across Valdevaqueros beach and to North Africa, and what feels like hundreds of majestic wind turbines.
There is a parking area/aire which costs €1 about 1.5k south from the start point of this La Pena hike. There are also a number of campsites located along the N-340.
It depends on your kids…its a real scramble to get to the top but then easy walking by the wind turbines all the way down.
Generally very quiet, most people will be on the beaches.
Hiking La Pena, Tarifa, Spain
If you’ve ever been to Tarifa, you’ll know its windy…the hundreds of wind turbines are majestic and add to the character, we think anyway!
This hike will take you up amongst them, after you have scaled La Pena. The start point is at an intersection of the N340, coming from Tarifa, it is the right turn after the pharmacy; once you arrive at the ornithological look out, take the right track ahead of you as you look to the hills. The track is clear on Google Earth, but starts to tail off a bit the higher you go..you will find youself scrambling through scrub for several hundred metres.
The view is glorious at the top; go right for La Pena and left for the turbine service road which you can follow all the way back down to the N340.
